Samantha Gurney

Bassoon Soloist

Samantha Gurney came to York University in 1990 and gained both a BA Hons and MA in Music. Orchestral playing has always been her greatest love.

Samantha Gurney was brought up in St. Ives, Cornwall where she began to learn the bassoon at a local music centre aged 10. From the age of 12 she spent much of her early playing career in adult orchestras as 2nd bassoon to her teacher Lin Ayton. At 12 Samantha also became principal bassoon in the Cornwall Youth Orchestra. The National Children’s Orchestra and National Youth Orchestra followed.

Samantha came to York University in 1990 and gained both a BA Hons and MA in Music. Whilst still a student at York she was asked to join the York Guildhall Orchestra where she played as principal bassoon for many years. Orchestral playing has always been her greatest love. She has had the great fortune to have had some fantastic teachers over the years including Liz Robertson and Lin Ayton in Cornwall and also John Orford, Stephen Rea and Lawrence Perkins.

Sam was delighted to be asked to play the Mozart with the Academy of St. Olave’s.
