Jonathan Hunter

Horn Soloist

Jonathan Hunter plays regularly with the City of York Guildhall Orchestra. Solo appearances include the Schumann Konzertstück and the Britten Serenade.

Jonathan Hunter comes from a musical family with a mother who was a professional singer and an older brother and sister who studied at Cheethams School of Music, Manchester. He regularly performed in public concerts given by the family between ages 10 to 18.

Whilst a chorister at Manchester Cathedral, Jonathan commenced his French horn studies aged 11 with Jonathan Goodall, who was principal horn of the BBC Philharmonic. From the age of 14 Jonathan studied the French horn at the Junior School of the Royal Northern College of Music (RNCM) under Jim Eastham (who played alongside Dennis Brain) and subsequently gained a place at the RNCM to continue studies professionally. He declined this to study dentistry!! He also declined a postgraduate place at the RNCM in favour of a dental career.

Jonathan was a member of the National Youth Orchestra for 3 years and the National Youth Choir for 1 year. He was principal horn in Manchester University Symphony and Chamber orchestras. Jonathan has appeared as soloist from an early age, including playing Britten’s Serenade for Tenor, Horn and Strings and Schumann’s Konzertstück, the first time whilst still at school, the second time on his 21st birthday whilst at Manchester University. He has been a soloist with York Chamber orchestra playing Haydn’s 2nd horn concerto and Britten’s Serenade with The Academy of St Olave’s. Currently he is working as a Specialist Orthodontic Practitioner (day job!) but is co-principal of the City of York Guildhall Orchestra with JanusWadsworth.
