Andrew Wright
Musical Director 1989-1997
Andrew Wright was appointed as Director of Music at St Olave’s Church and Musical Director for the Academy of St Olave’s in 1989, when he was also Director of Music at St Peter’s School in York.
Andrew Wright was educated at Wells Cathedral School in Somerset, studying organ with Anthony Crossland, Organist and Master of the Choristers at Wells Cathedral. Andrew then went on to study music at the University of London. After postgraduate study of Early Tudor Masses and some lecturing for the extra-mural department of the University of London, he went on teach at St Dunstan’s College in South East London, becoming Director of Music there at the age of 28.
Andrew moved to York in 1986 on his appointment as Director of Music at St Peter’s School, where he conducted major, annual choral performances. He first started conducting choirs at the age of 16, took his University Chamber Choir on tour to Berlin when 22, and has been involved with choirs ever since. Andrew believes passionately that choral music and singing should be at the centre of all music education, and introduced annual autumn choral concerts for the Academy of St Olave’s. Andrew retired from St Peter’s School in 2011.
