Concerts 1997 - 2009
Musical Director John Hastie
Under John Hastie‘s leadership, the Academy of St Olave’s explored a wide repertoire including the last symphonies of Mozart and Haydn, most of the Beethoven symphonies, the violin concertos of Beethoven and Mendelssohn and some fascinating French music of the 20th century. A piece was commissioned from Ralph Bateman, resulting in Ragnarok, an overture which uniquely combined the forces of the Academy along with the bells of St Olave’s church.
One of the highlights was the occasion when John’s friend and organ teacher, Naji Hakim, came to give the opening recital on the newly-rebuilt organ at St Olave’s and asked that the string section of the Academy play in the first UK performance of his third organ concerto. Then there were the two free concerts which the orchestra gave in Holy Week and after Easter, the first of which was John Tavener’s The Protecting Veil in which Christina Waldock was the soloist, followed a year later by Messiaen’s fantastic piece Et Expecto Ressurectionem Mortuorum for wind and percussion.
During John’s time the Academy introduced concerts for children and celebrated its 25th anniversary with an open-air concert in the Museum Gardens, fireworks and all! Concerts are listed here with the most recent first.

The 1828 square piano used in this programme was by Dettmer of London, and was kindly loaned by the University of York. Unlike many square pianos, this instrument has the great advantage of metal bracing which meant that it could be tuned to modern concert pitch. The square piano is very much a domestic instrument and does not produce anything like the volume of sound to which we have become accustomed with more modern pianos. The result is a much more intimate sound which must be accompanied and heard with the close attention appropriate to a salon of the period.
